World’s first 10-minute charge EV battery

An Israeli company has unveiled a ground-breaking electric vehicle battery that can charge in just 10 minutes

Spotted: StoreDot, an Israeli pioneer of hyper-fast battery charging technology for electric vehicles, has revealed its new extreme fast charging (XFC) cells. The prototype can go from 0 to fully charged in just 10 minutes, potentially eliminating one of the biggest limiting factors for e-vehicles: that they take longer to “refuel” than their petrol-powered counterparts.  

The StoreDot XFC cell uses the 4680 format (46 millimeters wide by 80 millimeters long), increasingly favoured by leading carmakers, including Tesla. Work on the batteries began at Warwick University in the UK and was conducted in collaboration with BP, StoreDot’s strategic partner. Although the exact battery design is a company secret, StoreDot does say that the batteries “leverage ion diffusion capability” and use nano-materials and “natural and inorganic compounds”.  

In addition to fast-charging, StoreDot explains that the batteries help eliminate range anxiety by enabling more miles-per-minute of charge. They claim that this is achieved primarily by exchanging graphite in the cell’s anode with metalloid nanoparticles. The company expects the EFC batteries to be ready for commercial manufacture at scale by 2024 and is in advanced discussions with many electric automobile manufacturers.

It’s highly significant that we can offer Electric Vehicle manufacturers the choice of cell formats, utilizing our XFC technology that will overcome the current barriers to EV ownership: range and charging anxiety.”  

Electric vehicles represent the future of transportation, and these new batteries could go a long way to bringing that future closer. But they are not the only recent innovation in eV battery technology.
